The Origin of the Fiel Clan in the Philippines

EARLY EXPLANATIONS ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THE FIEL CLAN IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Edict of Claveria was imposed on the Filipinos on November 21, 1849. This was the Spanish colonial decree establishing the systematic distribution of family names and the imposition of the Spanish naming system on the inhabitants of the Philippines. The surnames were culled from many Philippine languages, including Tagalog and Cebuano. Spanish, however, provided the bulk of the surnames.

Prudencio Tan Fiel, grandson of Antero Fiel of Ormoc, shared that when he was taking his EIT (Engineering In Training) studies at the University of Southern California, he met a Spanish historian, paleontologist, archeologist taking doctorate studies in paleontology in that school. He asked Pru how he got his last name.

“I told him probably it was of Spanish origin,” Pru narrated.

The Spanish historian explained that normally Spanish surnames are named after towns, villages, and communities where a person comes from. For example, Madrid, Villahermosa, Barcelona, Sevilla, etc. and also normally they are nouns, i.e., names of places and things like Gracia, Mesa, Laguna, Luna etc. and very rarely adjectives like Fiel. But from this guy's experience, he noted that in places that the Spaniards and Portuguese have colonized like South America, the natives were designated adjective word surnames like Bueno (good), Malo (bad), Delgado (thin), to indicate personalities and characteristics because the colonizers did not know the names of the places where the natives came from.

Assuming that we were only given designated Fiel surname, then our ancestors must have been very good people because Fiel means loyal, faithful and true.

However, it is surprising that in the list of surnames in that Edict of Claveria ,the Fiel surname was not listed! Meaning, our surname was not designated by the Spaniards to several people of a certain area. This Fiel surname, therefore, had a bearer(!) and was already existent prior to the Philippine distribution of surnames.

When I first asked my Lolo and Lola where did the Fiel Clan originated, they told me that the Fiel Clan were originally from Guimbangco-an, Sibonga, Cebu. They said that Cebu during the early 20th century was a very poor province. The composition of the soil is mostly rocky and so, the crops they planted almost produce no yield. That is why, the Fiel families transferred to Mindanao where corn plants grew higher than the farmers!

However, the Borromeo Clan of Cebu had also their explanation about the origin of the Fiel Clan. They claimed that sometime in the not-so-distant past, a relative of theirs with a Borromeo last name was trying to escape the arms of the law, settled in Ormoc. To make his identity change complete, he changed his last name to Fiel and married an Ormocana. In short, they claimed that the Fiels in Ormoc are actually Borromeos. Assuming that this claim is true, it can never claim to be the origin of all the Fiel families in Ormoc and all Fiels in general. It can only be rightly said that one of their kind decided to be one of us.

THE FACT ABOUT THE ORIGIN OF THE FIEL CLAN IN THE PHILIPPINES

The first Fiel to arrive in the Philippines was a prayle from the Augustinian Order. He was Fr. Felizardo Fiel, OSA. From Spain, he was sent to Cebu for a mission. His two brothers Favian Fiel and Andres Fiel who were non-priests followed him but they did not stay in Cebu. They preferred to stay in Dumaguete in Negros. As expected, many ladies fell to their natural charm because they were handsome mestizos. It was not surprising then that Favian was nicknamed “Terong.” Etymologically, terongon in deep Sugbuanon dialect means "to father many children."

From Dumaguete, they transferred to Ormoc. It proved to be a wise move. Favian became the first cabeza de barangay of Ormoc back in 1860s when it was still a barangay. He must have been very influential! He initiated the construction of a bridge called “Fuente dela Reina” adjacent to where the city hall of Ormoc stands today. This bridge is still existing and efforts were made to preserve it because the name of Favian Fiel was on it. His brother Andres, on the other hand, settled in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte and spent the rest of his life in that place together with his family. One of our Fiel descendants asked the superiors of the Order of St. Augustine (OSA) congregation if we could be given more information about him.

However, he was told that it would not be good to extract the histories of their confreres who were long dead. Perhaps the OSA congregation was also very careful because the history of Fr. Felizardo might awaken the media’s interest of excavating the scandals of the clergy during the times of Spanish conquest.

Fr. Felizardo Fiel and his brother Favian Fiel and Andres Fiel were the three great grand patriarchs of the Fiel Clan in the Philippines.

A warning to the readers before we proceed: Please scan the pages with open mind. The stories you will read here are sacred stories. These are the stories that formed the greater part of who we are today. However imperfect, they are full of lessons and inspirations. They can serve as our story guide to be better individuals in our time, and hopefully good models for the Fiel generations to come.

Fr. Felizardo Fiel, OSA had a relationship with the young cook in his mission area. Generosa Lucero, a lass from Argao, Cebu, became pregnant. According to Amir Nasser Dela Cruz Salamat, “When she was asked by her female kin, why she allowed herself to get pregnant by Fr. Felizardo Fiel, out of innocence, she was afraid of the wrath of eternal punishment..She faced a lot of trials in her life while pregnant of her child. She was disowned by her family. She received maledictions. There were a lot of attempts from her kin to abort the child in her womb because the child's father was a priest who for them was a sinless and holy man. But, Generosa never took the courage to be tempted and to commit abortion.” The child, who was named Augustin, would soon become one of the great Juan De Marco of the Clan.

AUGUSTIN LUCERO FIEL, THE CLAN'S JUAN DE MARCO

Augustin Lucero Fiel grew up as an intelligent handsome man who knowledgeable in business, astronomy and music. However, true to his name, he was also a great lover of women. He married the beautiful and religious Teodora Bangoy of Baclayon, Bohol, Philippines. The marriage was brought to the test many times because of Augustin’s womanizing.

One day, Augustin brought his concubine the 15-year-old Magdalena Gelbolingo in their home in Sibonga. Amir Nasser Dela Cruz Salamat, one of our clan historians narrated: “This made the pregnant Teodora furious of jealousy. In order to be welcomed in the Fiel place, Magdalena fabricated a story that Teodora had another man in Carcar, Cebu whom she met secretly. This made the Fiel household in doubt of Teodora's fidelity to Augustin. Unknown to others, the man in Carcar was Francisco Bangoy, the elder brother of Teodora who had dried fish and fried pig intestine business. Francisco Bangoy was the father of Gabriel Bangoy whose wife was Alejandra Porta. When Teodora gave birth to her own son, Generosa put Magdalena as the mother of the newly born child and of course, Augustin as the father! This made Teodora left Sibonga because after giving birth, she was disowned by the Fiel household. She went back home to Baclayon, Bohol, Philippines weeping and never returned to Sibonga for several years until she was informed that Augustin died due to heart attack. Teodora saw and met again his son Lucas Fiel on the day of her grandson Faustino Embrado Fiel's wedding to Doña Ysabel Sauza Guidote.”

For the record, Augustin had the distinction of having the most number of (documented) wives, and he had children from all of her seven wives! All in all, he had 29 children! Truly, a great philanderer!

Zita Rocha (sixth wife) and Jacoba Suarez (seventh wife) were known cousins from Sitio Ubos in Tagbilaran, Bohol. According to Fr. Eduardo “Jingjong” Rocha, SVD – today there stands an ancestral house of the Rocha-Suarez clan in Sitio Ubos. This place, however, is not yet explored by any of our Fiel Clan historians.

Salubong in Olutanga Island

The Salubong ("Sugat" in Cebuano) is a Filipino tradition done early in the morning of Easter Sunday, wherein the images of the Risen Christ and Sorrowful Mother symbolically meet in a pre-dawn procession.

The celebration starts with two different processions that start at different points. The first one consists of the Risen Christ carried by men while the second consist of the Blessed Virgin Mary (covered with a black veil to denote her mourning) carried by women. These two processions meet at the church courtyard from different routes.

At this point, the ceremony of the meeting begins with the choir singing alleluias as Mary approaches Jesus. Then, an angel descends on top of the head of Mary and lifts the black veil from her, exposing a happy mother who is seeing her son. Little angels will then sing songs of joy.

Basilan Inter-faith Group Spearheads "Walk for Peace"

Close to a thousand Basileños, braving the scourging heat of the sun, marched a 3-kilometer road on February 24, 2011 to show that violence in the province has to finally put an end.

“Walk for Peace” is one among the concrete plans that the IFCL in Basilan have undertake after series of meetings and consultation and it is a way to convey the message of unity and peace, most especially for the victims of violence.

Ms. January Zanoria, Christian Coordinator of the Interfaith Council of Leaders (IFCL) Basilan, said that the number of brave people who participated in the activity is stunningly inspiring given the latest kidnapping and shooting incidents happened in the heart of the city ofIsabela, the show-window of the province, preying on the hapless innocent victims.”Unlike before, when various leaders called the people to condemn violence the most that we can do then was to participate in a candle lightning activity anything more than that would surely send the people shiver down their spines for fear they might be the next victim. But today the Basileños have already conquered their fears. The people have spoken that violence is no place in the province”, Zanoria further said.

Mr. Leopoldo Ramirez, a 65 years old vendor for 32 years, said that this is the first time he experienced that Basileños has come out of its shell and openly condemning the barbaric acts of the criminal. “I’m glad that the people are braver today, during our time no one participates in this kind of activity for fear that the criminals will go after them,” Mr. Ramirez said in a local dialect.

Meanwhile, Sr. Lydia T. Sumampong, SFIC from the Prelature of Basilan, said that the“Walk for Peace or A Day of Prayer” as a whole was an affirmation. A sign that indeed people in Basilan are united in condemning violence thus we are willing to work for peace and reconciliation together as one community.

An active member of IFCL-Basilan, Pastor Ronald Paulino of the United Evangelical Church, prior to the event for his part said the lighting of candleswill be the culminating event which will start at 6:00 PM of the same day. “I am cordially inviting the Peace- loving Basileños to join us in prayers for the safe and immediate release of Larry Delos Santos so that we can quickly start the healing process for the sake of our province”, the Pastor added.

According to Professor Alzad Sattar, Muslim Coordinator of IFCL-Basilan and member of the influential Muslim community said that his presence is his personal way to experience healing and reconciliation unfolding before his very eyes.

The “Walk for Peace” was successfully participated in by Muslims and Christians from different sectors including students from various government and private schools, National and local government officials, local police (PNP) and Special Forces of the Philippine Army.

Pope Benedict's Lenten Message 2011

“You were buried with him in baptism,in which you were also raised with him.” (cf. Col 2: 12)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

The Lenten period, which leads us to the celebration of Holy Easter, is for the Church a most valuable and important liturgical time, in view of which I am pleased to offer a specific word in order that it may be lived with due diligence. As she awaits the definitive encounter with her Spouse in the eternal Easter, the Church community, assiduous in prayer and charitable works, intensifies her journey in purifying the spirit, so as to draw more abundantly from the Mystery of Redemption the new life in Christ the Lord (cf. Preface I of Lent).

1. This very life was already bestowed upon us on the day of our Baptism, when we “become sharers in Christ’s death and Resurrection”, and there began for us “the joyful and exulting adventure of his disciples” (Homily on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, 10 January, 2010). In his Letters, St. Paul repeatedly insists on the singular communion with the Son of God that this washing brings about. The fact that, in most cases, Baptism is received in infancy highlights how it is a gift of God: no one earns eternal life through their own efforts. The mercy of God, which cancels sin and, at the same time, allows us to experience in our lives “the mind of Christ Jesus” (Phil 2: 5), is given to men and women freely. The Apostle to the Gentiles, in the Letter to the Philippians, expresses the meaning of the transformation that takes place through participation in the death and resurrection of Christ, pointing to its goal: that “I may come to know him and the power of his resurrection, and partake of his sufferings by being molded to the pattern of his death, striving towards the goal of resurrection from the dead” (Phil 3: 10-11). Hence, Baptism is not a rite from the past, but the encounter with Christ, which informs the entire existence of the baptized, imparting divine life and calling for sincere conversion; initiated and supported by Grace, it permits the baptized to reach the adult stature of Christ.

A particular connection binds Baptism to Lent as the favorable time to experience this saving Grace. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council exhorted all of the Church’s Pastors to make greater use “of the baptismal features proper to the Lenten liturgy” (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy Sacrosanctum concilium, n. 109). In fact, the Church has always associated the Easter Vigil with the celebration of Baptism: this Sacrament realizes the great mystery in which man dies to sin, is made a sharer in the new life of the Risen Christ and receives the same Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead (cf. Rm 8: 11). This free gift must always be rekindled in each one of us, and Lent offers us a path like that of the catechumenate, which, for the Christians of the early Church, just as for catechumens today, is an irreplaceable school of faith and Christian life. Truly, they live their Baptism as an act that shapes their entire existence.

2. In order to undertake more seriously our journey towards Easter and prepare ourselves to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord – the most joyous and solemn feast of the entire liturgical year – what could be more appropriate than allowing ourselves to be guided by the Word of God? For this reason, the Church, in the Gospel texts of the Sundays of Lent, leads us to a particularly intense encounter with the Lord, calling us to retrace the steps of Christian initiation: for catechumens, in preparation for receiving the Sacrament of rebirth; for the baptized, in light of the new and decisive steps to be taken in the sequela Christi and a fuller giving of oneself to him.

The First Sunday of the Lenten journey reveals our condition as human beings here on earth. The victorious battle against temptation, the starting point of Jesus’ mission, is an invitation to become aware of our own fragility in order to accept the Grace that frees from sin and infuses new strength in Christ – the way, the truth and the life (cf. Ordo Initiationis Christianae Adultorum, n. 25). It is a powerful reminder that Christian faith implies, following the example of Jesus and in union with him, a battle “against the ruling forces who are masters of the darkness in this world” (Eph 6: 12), in which the devil is at work and never tires – even today – of tempting whoever wishes to draw close to the Lord: Christ emerges victorious to open also our hearts to hope and guide us in overcoming the seductions of evil.

The Gospel of the Transfiguration of the Lord puts before our eyes the glory of Christ, which anticipates the resurrection and announces the divinization of man. The Christian community becomes aware that Jesus leads it, like the Apostles Peter, James and John “up a high mountain by themselves” (Mt 17: 1), to receive once again in Christ, as sons and daughters in the Son, the gift of the Grace of God: “This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favor. Listen to him” (Mt 17: 5). It is the invitation to take a distance from the noisiness of everyday life in order to immerse oneself in God’s presence. He desires to hand down to us, each day, a Word that penetrates the depths of our spirit, where we discern good from evil (cf. Heb 4:12), reinforcing our will to follow the Lord.

The question that Jesus puts to the Samaritan woman: “Give me a drink” (Jn 4: 7), is presented to us in the liturgy of the third Sunday; it expresses the passion of God for every man and woman, and wishes to awaken in our hearts the desire for the gift of “a spring of water within, welling up for eternal life” (Jn 4: 14): this is the gift of the Holy Spirit, who transforms Christians into “true worshipers,” capable of praying to the Father “in spirit and truth” (Jn 4: 23). Only this water can extinguish our thirst for goodness, truth and beauty! Only this water, given to us by the Son, can irrigate the deserts of our restless and unsatisfied soul, until it “finds rest in God”, as per the famous words of St. Augustine.

The Sunday of the man born blind presents Christ as the light of the world. The Gospel confronts each one of us with the question: “Do you believe in the Son of man?” “Lord, I believe!” (Jn 9: 35. 38), the man born blind joyfully exclaims, giving voice to all believers. The miracle of this healing is a sign that Christ wants not only to give us sight, but also open our interior vision, so that our faith may become ever deeper and we may recognize him as our only Savior. He illuminates all that is dark in life and leads men and women to live as “children of the light”.

On the fifth Sunday, when the resurrection of Lazarus is proclaimed, we are faced with the ultimate mystery of our existence: “I am the resurrection and the life… Do you believe this?” (Jn 11: 25-26). For the Christian community, it is the moment to place with sincerity – together with Martha – all of our hopes in Jesus of Nazareth: “Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world” (Jn 11: 27). Communion with Christ in this life prepares us to overcome the barrier of death, so that we may live eternally with him. Faith in the resurrection of the dead and hope in eternal life open our eyes to the ultimate meaning of our existence: God created men and women for resurrection and life, and this truth gives an authentic and definitive meaning to human history, to the personal and social lives of men and women, to culture, politics and the economy. Without the light of faith, the entire universe finishes shut within a tomb devoid of any future, any hope.

The Lenten journey finds its fulfillment in the Paschal Triduum, especially in the Great Vigil of the Holy Night: renewing our baptismal promises, we reaffirm that Christ is the Lord of our life, that life which God bestowed upon us when we were reborn of “water and Holy Spirit”, and we profess again our firm commitment to respond to the action of the Grace in order to be his disciples.

3. By immersing ourselves into the death and resurrection of Christ through the Sacrament of Baptism, we are moved to free our hearts every day from the burden of material things, from a self-centered relationship with the “world” that impoverishes us and prevents us from being available and open to God and our neighbor. In Christ, God revealed himself as Love (cf. 1Jn 4: 7-10). The Cross of Christ, the “word of the Cross”, manifests God’s saving power (cf. 1Cor 1: 18), that is given to raise men and women anew and bring them salvation: it is love in its most extreme form(cf. Encyclical Deus caritas est, n. 12). Through the traditional practices of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, which are an expression of our commitment to conversion, Lent teaches us how to live the love of Christ in an ever more radical way. Fasting, which can have various motivations, takes on a profoundly religious significance for the Christian: by rendering our table poorer, we learn to overcome selfishness in order to live in the logic of gift and love; by bearing some form of deprivation – and not just what is in excess – we learn to look away from our “ego”, to discover Someone close to us and to recognize God in the face of so many brothers and sisters. For Christians, fasting, far from being depressing, opens us ever more to God and to the needs of others, thus allowing love of God to become also love of our neighbor (cf. Mk 12: 31).

In our journey, we are often faced with the temptation of accumulating and love of money that undermine God’s primacy in our lives. The greed of possession leads to violence, exploitation and death; for this, the Church, especially during the Lenten period, reminds us to practice almsgiving – which is the capacity to share. The idolatry of goods, on the other hand, not only causes us to drift away from others, but divests man, making him unhappy, deceiving him, deluding him without fulfilling its promises, since it puts materialistic goods in the place of God, the only source of life. How can we understand God’s paternal goodness, if our heart is full of egoism and our own projects, deceiving us that our future is guaranteed? The temptation is to think, just like the rich man in the parable: “My soul, you have plenty of good things laid by for many years to come…”. We are all aware of the Lord’s judgment: “Fool! This very night the demand will be made for your soul…” (Lk 12: 19-20). The practice of almsgiving is a reminder of God’s primacy and turns our attention towards others, so that we may rediscover how good our Father is, and receive his mercy.

During the entire Lenten period, the Church offers us God’s Word with particular abundance. By meditating and internalizing the Word in order to live it every day, we learn a precious and irreplaceable form of prayer; by attentively listening to God, who continues to speak to our hearts, we nourish the itinerary of faith initiated on the day of our Baptism. Prayer also allows us to gain a new concept of time: without the perspective of eternity and transcendence, in fact, time simply directs our steps towards a horizon without a future. Instead, when we pray, we find time for God, to understand that his “words will not pass away” (cf. Mk 13: 31), to enter into that intimate communion with Him “that no one shall take from you” (Jn 16: 22), opening us to the hope that does not disappoint, eternal life.

In synthesis, the Lenten journey, in which we are invited to contemplate the Mystery of the Cross, is meant to reproduce within us “the pattern of his death” (Ph 3: 10), so as to effect a deep conversion in our lives; that we may be transformed by the action of the Holy Spirit, like St. Paul on the road to Damascus; that we may firmly orient our existence according to the will of God; that we may be freed of our egoism, overcoming the instinct to dominate others and opening us to the love of Christ. The Lenten period is a favorable time to recognize our weakness and to accept, through a sincere inventory of our life, the renewing Grace of the Sacrament of Penance, and walk resolutely towards Christ.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, through the personal encounter with our Redeemer and through fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the journey of conversion towards Easter leads us to rediscover our Baptism. This Lent, let us renew our acceptance of the Grace that God bestowed upon us at that moment, so that it may illuminate and guide all of our actions. What the Sacrament signifies and realizes, we are called to experience every day by following Christ in an ever more generous and authentic manner. In this our itinerary, let us entrust ourselves to the Virgin Mary, who generated the Word of God in faith and in the flesh, so that we may immerse ourselves – just as she did – in the death and resurrection of her Son Jesus, and possess eternal life.

Placing the Crucifix at the Center of the Altar

By Father Mauro Gagliardi ROME, FEB. 25, 2011 (Zenit.org).- Throughout its history, the Church has established sensible signs that would help the faithful to elevate their souls to God.

The Council of Trent, referring in particular to the Holy Mass, motivated this habit by recalling that "human nature is such that it cannot be easily elevated to the meditation of divine things without external aids: on account of this the Church, as a loving Mother, has established certain rites…to render more evident the majesty of such a great sacrifice and to introduce the minds of the faithful, with these visible signs of religion and piety, to the contemplation of the sublime realities hidden in this sacrifice" (DS, 1746).

One of the oldest signs consists in turning to the east to pray. The east is symbol of Christ, the sun of justice. "Erik Peterson demonstrated the close connection between prayer toward the East and the cross, evident connection at the latest for the post Constantinian period. [...] Diffused among Christians was the use of indicating the direction of prayer with a cross on the eastern wall in the apse of basilicas, but also in private rooms, for example, of monks and hermits" (U.M. Lang, "Rivolti al Signore," Siena, 2006, p. 32).

Another is to look up: "If we are asked toward what do the priest and faithful look during prayer, the answer must be: on high, toward the apsidal vault! In fact, during prayer the praying community did not look in front of it to the altar or the chair, rather it raised its hands and eyes on high. Thus the apsidal vault points to the most important element of the decoration of the church, at the most profound and holy moment of the liturgical action, which is prayer" (S. Heid,"Gebetshaltung und Ostung in fruhchristlicher Zeit," in Rivista di Archeologia Cristiana, 82 [2006], p. 369).

Hence, when Christ is represented in the apse between the Apostles and martyrs, it is not just a representation, but rather his epiphany before the praying community. The community then "raised the hands and eyes on high to 'heaven,' looking at Christ in the apsidal mosaic and talked with him, prayed to him. Evidently, Christ was thus directly present in the image. Given that the apsidal vault was the point of convergence of the prayerful gaze, art furnished all that the man of prayer needed: Heaven, from which the Son of God appeared to the community as from a platform" (ibid., p. 370).

Hence, for these Christians, "to pray and to look formed a whole. The man of prayer wanted not only to pray, but also hoped to see. If a celestial cross of Christ in his heavenly glory was shown in the apse in a marvelous way, then by that very fact the man of prayer who looked on high could see this exactly: that heaven opened for him and Christ showed himself to him" (ibid., p. 374).

Praying to God

Deduced from preceding historical scenes is that the liturgy was not imagined primarily as a dialogue between the priest and the assembly. We cannot enter into details here: we limit ourselves to saying that the celebration of the Holy Mass "toward the people" is a concept that entered to form part of the Christian mentality only in the modern age, as serious studies demonstrate and Benedict XVI confirmed: "[t]he idea that the priest and the people in prayer must look at one another reciprocally was born only in the modern age and is completely foreign to ancient Christianity. In fact, the priest and the people do not address their prayer to one another, but together they address it to the one Lord" ("Teologia della Liturgia," Vatican City, 2010, pp. 7-8).

Despite the fact that Vatican II never touched this aspect, in 1964 the instruction "Inter Oecumenici," issued by the Council in charge of enacting the liturgical reformed desired by the Council in No. 91 prescribes: "It is good that the main altar be detached from the wall to be able to turn around easily and celebrate 'versus populum.'" From that moment, the position of the priest "toward the people," although not obligatory, became the most common way of celebrating Mass. Things being as they are, the Holy Father proposes, also in these cases, that the old meaning of "oriented" prayer not be lost and suggests that difficulties be averted by placing at the center of the altar the sign of Christ crucified (cf. "Teologia della Liturgia," p. 88).

Espousing this proposal, added in my turn is the suggestion that the dimensions of the sign must be such as to make it very visible, under pain of lacking effectiveness (cf. M. Gagliardi, "Introduzione al Mistero Eucharistico," Rome, 2007, p. 371). The visibility of the cross on the altar is implied by the General Instruction of the Roman Missal: "There is also to be a cross, with the figure of Christ crucified upon it, either on the altar or near it, where it is clearly visible to the assembled congregation. It is appropriate that such a cross, which calls to mind for the faithful the saving Passion of the Lord, remain near the altar even outside of liturgical celebrations" (No. 308).

It is not specified, however, if the cross must be necessarily at the center. Intervening here, therefore, are motivations of a theological and pastoral order, which in the restricted space at our disposition we cannot expose.

We limit ourselves to conclude quoting Benedict XVI: "It is not necessary in prayer, and more than that, it is not even appropriate to look at one another reciprocally; much less so when receiving Communion. [...] In an exaggerated and misunderstood implementation of 'celebration toward the people,' in fact, the crosses at the center of the altars were removed as a general norm -- even in the basilica of St. Peter in Rome -- so as to not obstruct the view between the celebrant and the people. However, the cross on the altar is not an impediment to sight, but rather a common point of reference.

"It is an 'iconostasi' that remains open, which does not impede being mutually in communion, but is a mediator and still signifies for everyone the image that concentrates and unifies our sight. I dare to propose the thesis that the cross on the altar is not an obstacle, but the preliminary condition for the celebration 'versus populum.' Also made clear with this would be the distinction between the liturgy of the Word and the Eucharistic prayer. Whereas the first is about proclamation and hence of an immediate reciprocal relationship, the second has to do with community adoration in which all of us continue to be under the invitation: 'Conversi ad Dominum' -- let us turn toward the Lord; let us convert to the Lord!" ("Teologia della Liturgia," p. 536).

And how would you know if the person seated next to you in the jeepney is not a Catholic? He or she makes a point of telling you that you have something on your forehead, assuming you would want to wash it off. Hehe. But many Catholics wear that smudge faithfully all day. Happy Ash Wednesday!!!

1. The origin of the custom of using ashes in religious ritual can be found in the Old Testament. The prophet Jeremiah, for example, calls for repentance this way: “O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes” (Jer 6:26). The prophet Isaiah, on the other hand, critiques the use of sackcloth and ashes as inadequate to please God (Is 58:5). (Perhaps) the best known example of repentance in the Old Testament is that of the King of Nineveh: “He rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes” (Jon 3:6).

2.In the New Testament, Jesus refers to the use of sackcloth and ashes as signs of repentance: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes” (Mt 11:21, Lk 10:13).

3.Thomas Talley, an expert on the history of the liturgical year, says that the first clearly datable liturgy for Ash Wednesday that provides for sprinkling ashes is in the Romano-Germanic pontifical of 960. Before that time, ashes had been used as a sign of admission to the Order of Penitents.

4.As early as the sixth century, the Spanish Mozarabic rite calls for signing the forehead with ashes when admitting a gravely ill person to the Order of Penitents.

5. At the beginning of the 11th century, Abbot Aelfric notes that it was customary for all the faithful to take part in a ceremony on the Wednesday before Lent that included the imposition of ashes. Near the end of that century, Pope Urban II called for the general use of ashes on that day. Only later did this day come to be called Ash Wednesday.

6. At first, clerics and men had ashes sprinkled on their heads, while women had the sign of the cross made with ashes on their foreheads. Eventually, of course, the ritual used with women came to be used for men as well.

7. In the 12th century the rule developed that the ashes were to be created by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. Many parishes today invite parishioners to bring such palms to church before Lent begins and have a ritual burning of the palms after Mass.

8. Originally, the marking of ashes is related with baptism. Those who had committed serious sins confessed their sins to the bishop or his representative and were assigned a penance that was to be carried out over a period of time. Penance this time was called “second baptism.” With the gradual disappearance of the Order of Penitents, the use of ashes became detached from its original context. The focus on personal penance and the Sacrament of Penance continued in Lent, but the connection to Baptism was no longer obvious to most people. This is reflected in the formula that came to be associated with the distribution of ashes: “Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return.”

9. The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) called for the renewal of Lent, recovering its ancient baptismal character. Since Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, it naturally is also the beginning to recover a baptismal focus. One hint of this is the second formula that is offered for the imposition of ashes: “Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel.” Though it doesn’t explicitly mention Baptism, it recalls our baptismal promises to reject sin and profess our faith. It is a clear call to conversion, to that movement away from sin and toward Christ that we have to embrace over and over again through our lives.

10. There is a certain irony in the gospel reading for today, which tells us to wash our faces so that we do not appear to be doing penance on the day that we go around with “dirt” on our foreheads. This is just another way Jesus is telling us not to perform religious acts for public recognition. We don’t wear the ashes to proclaim our holiness but to acknowledge that we are a community of sinners in need of repentance and renewal.

When we receive ashes on our foreheads, we remember who we are.

We remember that we are creatures of the earth (“Remember that you are dust”).

We remember that we are mortal beings (“and to dust you will return”).

We remember that we are baptized.

We remember that we are people on a journey of conversion (“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel”).

We remember that we are members of the body of Christ (and that smudge on our foreheads will proclaim that identity to others, too).

Pope Benedict's New Book Explores Creation and Search for Truth

VATICAN, March 2, 2011 (Zenit.org).- In his latest book, Benedict XVI is underlining the serious need for mankind to recognize and understand truth and the meaning of creation by drawing near to God.

The Pope makes this reflection in his book, "Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week," scheduled to be released March 10 by Ignatius Press. It is the second volume of the Pontiff’s study on Jesus; Volume 1 was released in 2007.

Referring to the conversation with Pontius Pilate, the Pontiff noted that Jesus "defines as the essence of his kingship witness to the truth."

He continued, "If Jesus bases his concept of kingship and kingdom on truth as the fundamental category, then it is entirely understandable that the pragmatic Pilate asks him: 'What is truth?'"

This "is a very serious question, bound up with the fate of mankind," the Holy Father affirmed. "What, then, is truth? Are we able to recognize it?"

Drawing from scholastic philosophy and the words of St. Thomas Aquinas, Benedict XVI underlined the definition of truth as "conformity between the intellect and reality."

"If a man's intellect reflects a thing as it is in itself," the Pope explained, "then he has found truth: but only a small fragment of reality -- not truth in its grandeur and integrity."

He affirmed, "We come closer to what Jesus meant with another of Saint Thomas' teachings: 'Truth is in God's intellect properly and firstly; in human intellect it is present properly and derivatively."

Thus, the Pontiff stated, God is "truth itself, the sovereign and first truth."

Grandeur and purity

"Again and again in the world, truth and error, truth and untruth, are almost inseparably mixed together," he observed. "The truth in all its grandeur and purity does not appear."

"The world is 'true' to the extent that it reflects God," the Holy Father affirmed, and "it becomes more and more true the closer it draws to God."

He continued: "Man becomes true, he becomes himself, when he grows in God's likeness. Then he attains to his proper nature."

"'Bearing witness to the truth,'" Benedict XVI explained, "means giving priority to God and to his will over against the interests of the world and its powers."

He noted that "the unredeemed state of the world consists precisely in the failure to understand the meaning of creation, in the failure to recognize truth."

As a result, the Pope observed, "the rule of pragmatism is imposed, by which the strong arm of the powerful becomes the god of this world."

Science

He noted that "at this point, modern man is tempted to say: Creation has become intelligible to us through science."

"Indeed, in the magnificent mathematics of creation, which today we can read in the human genetic code, we recognize the language of God," the Pontiff acknowledged. "But unfortunately not the whole language."

He continued: "The functional truth about man has been discovered. But the truth about man himself -- who he is, where he comes from, what he should do, what is right, what is wrong -- this unfortunately cannot be read in the same way."

"Hand in hand with growing knowledge of functional truth there seems to be an increasing blindness toward truth itself -- toward the question of our real identity and purpose," the Holy Father lamented.

"If man lives without truth," Benedict XVI said, "life passes him by; ultimately he surrenders the field to whoever is the stronger."

He continued: "Redemption in the fullest sense can only consist in the truth becoming recognizable. And it becomes recognizable when God becomes recognizable. He becomes recognizable in Jesus Christ."

"In Christ," the Pope affirmed, "God entered the world and set up the criterion of truth in the midst of history."

Laguna Bishop to Ordain 3 Priests

SAN PABLO City, March 6, 2011—The bishop of San Pablo Diocese is scheduled to ordain three new priests for Laguna next week.

Bishop Leo M. Drona is set to raise to the order of Priesthood on March 7 at 9:00 a.m. two deacons: Rev. Jan Jan Alota and Rev. John Lino Calampiano at San Vicente Ferrer Parish Church in Binan City.

Another deacon Rev. Henry Dancalan Rabe would be ordained priest on March 14 in his hometown parish of St. James the Apostle Parish Church in Paete town.The three candidates for the priesthood are graduates from the SVD Theological Seminary in Tagaytay City last school year.

Upon ordination, the three news priests would raise the number of the San Pablo Clergy and religious to about 200.

Priest Hits Slow Evacuation of OFWs in Libya

MANILA, March 3, 2011— Despite efforts by the government to bring home the overseas Filipino workers in Libya, a Franciscan priest said its action is ‘too slow.’

Based on the reports relayed to them by their priests in Libya, Manila-based Fr. Pete Montellana said the situation there is getting worse causing fright among OFWs.

It also appeared, he said, that the Philippine Embassy there can’t provide the necessary assistance to the OFWs trapped in the troubled country.

“Based on the information we received from our Franciscans (based in Libya) it appeared that the assistance rendered by the government was slow. It was really slow,” said Montellana.

The missionary made the statement Thursday over church-run Radyo Veritas although the government claimed it is doing significant progress in its repatriation program.

“That’s not true. They should make if faster. We, in the Franciscan community, are urging them to speed up the giving of assistance to the OFWs,” he said.

He expressed concern that the situation could get worse if the Gadaffi administration would arm its civilian population.

Montellana also said that the Filipinos had to fend on their own on how they could rescue themselves.

One of the priests in the area also reported that the OFWs are experiencing food shortage.

Montellana said: “Those (Filipinos) who are staying in the desert were forced to leave the area because of scarcity in food.”

“In fact, they said that the OFWs in Tripoli limited their food consumption and eating only one meal a day,” he said.

The priest admitted that bringing the Filipinos out of Libya has been difficult, especially those who are staying in the desert because they were the ones who were left behind by their employers.

The Order of Friar Minors (OFM) had been providing assistance to Filipinos in Libya for the last 17 years.

Montellana said that the bulk of the Filipino population in Libya is living in Tripoli.

“If I am not mistaken there are about 9,000 OFWs in Tripoli. There are also thousands of Filipinos in Benghazi,” he said.

Filipinos Seek Refuge at Tripoli Catholic Church

MANILA, Feb. 25, 2011—An unspecified number of Filipinos sought refuge inside a Catholic Church in Libya as protest actions against the government escalate in the country.

Fr. Hermilo Vilason, a Franciscan Missionary and chaplain to Filipino migrants in Libya reported that since Feb. 21, they’ve been awakened by gunfire, “at times sporadic and at times continuous.”

They have also heard of helicopters hovering overhead but could not see them as they preferred to stay inside the church.

“Bishop Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli told us to stay inside the church rather than be put in danger outside,” Vilason said. According to him, only few vehicles have been plying the streets of Tripoli since Feb. 21.

The priest said they have nowhere to go because only two in the group speak Arabic.

But he is optimistic that they will remain safe inside the church.

“Besides, nobody since 1971 dared to hurl stones or create any trouble within the church compound,” Vilason explained.

He said the bishop believes their fate is in God’s hands and would only ask for prayers for their continued safety.

Relatives of OFWs working in Libya and other middle-eastern countries have criticized the Philippine government for the alleged neglect of their loved ones.

The Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, however, has already sent some of its staff to work for the safe exit of Filipinos in their areas.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Tripoli was established in 1630 and was renamed Apostolic Vicariate of Libya in 1894.

The country has 4.5 million Libyan citizens with 1.6% or roughly 70,000 as Roman Catholics, mostly migrant workers from various Asia countries. To date, there are 26,000 overseas Filipino workers in Libya. (Melo M. Acuna)

Sayings of St. Joseph Freinademetz

Saint Joseph Freinademetz (April 15, 1852 - January 28, 1908) was a member of the Society of the Divine Word. He was born in Oies, a section of the town of Badia in the southern Dolomites, which was then part of Austria and now part of Italy. He was sent to China and was very active in the education of Chinese laymen and priests. He also wrote a catechetical manual in Chinese, which he considered a crucial part of their missionary effort. He was canonized on October 5, 2003 by Pope John Paul II.

Talking Points for Dialogue on the Reproductive Health Bill (HB 96; filed July 1 , 2010)

The polarization of Philippine society over the Reproductive Health Bill has been a source of discouragement and discontent among Filipinos. It is unfortunate that the debate has focused only on whether the Bill should be passed or rejected in its present form. Either option would not be good for Filipinos. The Church sees in the proposed Bill serious flaws that can lead to violations of human rights and freedom of conscience. It would not be acceptable to pass it in its present form. Total rejection of the Bill, however, will not change the status quo of high rates of infant mortality, maternal deaths, and abortions. It is a moral imperative that such dehumanizing conditions should not be allowed to continue. What is needed is a third option: critical and constructive engagement. By working together to amend the objectionable provisions of the Bill and retain the provisions that actually improve the lives of Filipinos, both the proponents and opponents of the Bill can make a contribution to protection of the dignity of Filipinos and an improvement of their quality of life.

The following are talking points and proposals for dialogue and negotiation on the objectionable portions of the Bill:

The Protection of Human Life and the Constitution

• The Church insists on protection of human life upon fertilization. The question to be answered by the State is if this is the same position it will take regarding the protection of human life.

• The Philippine Constitution says that the State will protect the life of the unborn upon conception. It is not specified in the Constitution whether conception means fertilization or the implantation of an embryo in the womb. The Constitutional Convention seemed to favor fertilization. The definition of conception will have a bearing whether contraceptives that prevent the implantation of embryos would be legally allowed or not. This definition of conception in the Constitution must be worked out both by medical and legal experts in order to determine the parameters of what reproductive services can be provided by the Bill.

Contraceptives that prevent the implantation of embryos

• At the center of the controversy regarding abortion and the RH Bill are IUDs and other contraceptive medications and devices that may have the possible effect of preventing the implantation of an embryo, which for the Catholic Church, is considered an abortifacient effect. [Contraceptives without abortifacient effects are treated differently in church teaching. They are forbidden for Catholics but other religious traditions allow them.]

• Proposal: The State first has to make a clear position whether it considers the prevention of implantation of an embryo as an abortion. If the State takes this position, there must be a careful and scientifically based evaluation of each of the medicines and devices provided by the Bill. Those contraceptive medicines and devices which are determined to have abortifacient effects are to be banned even now and regardless of whether the RH Bill is passed or not.

Age Appropriate, Value-Based, Integral Human Sexuality Education

• The mandatory nature of the sexuality education curriculum proposed by the Bill is a concern for the Church because it would compel Catholic educators to teach parts of the curriculum that may be unacceptable for Catholics. The Church is also concerned that the parents’ right to decide on the education of their children would be denied by such a mandatory curriculum for all schools.

• Proposal: For the purpose of protecting academic freedom and respecting religious traditions, should not the right of religious schools to write and implement their own sexuality education curriculum according their religious traditions be respected? For public schools and non-religious private schools, an appointed panel of parent representatives, educators, experts in child development and psychology, medical experts, and representatives of religious traditions can write the sexuality education curriculum and the DEPED can monitor the implementation. Parents with children in public schools should have the right to have their children exempted from the sexuality education class if the curriculum is not acceptable to them. The Constitution allows religious instruction in public schools only if the parents consent in writing. Should a similar provision be enacted relative to sexuality education? The Bill must also respect the conscientious objection of individual educators who refuse to teach a sexuality curriculum that violates their religious beliefs.

Providing Reproductive Health Information and Services for a Multi-Religious Society

• Even if the majority of the population of the country are Catholics, our democratic system should ensure that public polices are not determined solely by majority vote but also by a careful consideration of the common good of all, including non-Catholics.

• The Compendium of the Social Teaching of the Church rejects any imposition of norms by a majority that is discriminatory of the rights of a minority: (#422) “Because of its historical and cultural ties to a nation, a religious community might be given special recognition on the part of the State. Such recognition must in no way create discrimination within the civil or social order for other religious groups;” (#169): “Those responsible for government are required to interpret the common good of their country not only according to the guidelines of the majority but also according to the effective good of all the members of the community, including the minority.”

• It is the duty of various religions to teach their faithful and form their consciences about what their religious tradition allows and prohibits with regard to family planning. It is the duty of the government to provide correct and comprehensive information on all non-abortifacient (as defined by law) family planning methods that are available. Consciences will thus be better equipped to make informed choices according to their religious traditions.

• Proposal: There can be two separate parallel programs for providing information and training, one for NFP and another for artificial methods of family planning (with separate budgets). The separation of the programs will ensure that NFP will get adequate funding and those trainers who wish to teach only NFP for religious reasons will not be forced to teach artificial methods. The conscience of health workers and trainers should be respected. If a Catholic health worker or trainer conscientiously objects to teaching contraception methods, he or she should be allowed to teach only NFP methods.

Limits to the Anti-Discrimination Provision

• The current Bill prohibits the refusal of health care services and information based on a patient’s marital status, gender or sexual orientation, age, religion, personal circumstances, and nature of work. This provision must have parameters. For example, if a doctor refuses to administer an IUD to a minor who requests for it, would that be considered age discrimination?

• Should the provision apply equally to both in the public and private health care providers or shouldn’t private practitioners have more leeway in practicing their medicine as they see fit?

Employers' Responsibility

• Employers should not be required to provide in their CBAs reproductive health services of their employees. To enforce this requirement would be a violation of the conscience of Catholic employers.

• Proposal: Such a provision is unnecessary because the general Philhealth medical coverage, which is mandatory for all employees, provides for such reproductive health services upon request of the employee. This allows employers with religious objections to contraceptives or sterilizations to avoid direct formal cooperation in the provision of such family planning methods to their employees.

Contraception as Essential Medicines in Government Health Centers and Hospitals

• The Church’s objection to this provision is that it appears to treat pregnancy as a disease.

• Proposal: The question of whether contraceptives are essential medicines should be resolved by a panel of objective medical experts such as the Philippine Medical Association. What contraceptives actually prevent diseases? It would be helpful to be able to present cases where the use of a contraceptive is a medically indicated treatment for a particular disease or emergency situation. If some contraceptives are ultimately decided as essential or emergency medicines that should be stocked in government health centers and hospitals, no contraceptives with abortifacient effects are to be allowed.

Freedom of Speech

• Proposal: The Bill’s provision that penalizes malicious disinformation against the intention and provisions of the Bill should be refined by a clear description of what constitutes “malicious disinformation,” or failing that, the provision should be scrapped.

Implementing Norms

• Proposal: The committee to be in-charge of the Bill's implementing norms should have representatives from major religious traditions to ensure that the rights of people of various faiths would be protected.

The above proposals are intended to generate constructive and respectful dialogue leading to concrete actions that would correct the RH Bill. It is hoped that the parties involved in the RH debate would move away from hard-line positions and consider negotiations as a more positive step towards working for the good of all Filipinos, with special consideration for the unborn, the youth, women and families in difficult circumstances.

Finally, we can turn to the following Christian maxim as our guide in our search for answers and solutions regarding the RH Bill: “In essentials, unity; in non-essentials, liberty; and in all things, charity.” For things pertaining to protecting human life and dignity, we need to come to a consensus for the common good; for things that can be left to individual decisions without violating human life and dignity, we need to respect freedom of conscience of every Filipino both Catholics and non-Catholics; in all our discussions, we need to speak and act with charity and understanding as members of the same human family and community.

History of Olutanga

Long time ago, before the Spaniards came to the country, the island of Olutanga was inhabited by a native tribe, under the leadership at Panglima Santikan and his wife Indah Dindah. This tribe were known as “LUTANGAN”, the origin of the name of the island Olutanga. The main economic activities of this tribe was fishing and some “slash and burn” farming. The island then was dominantly covered with virgin and verdant forest. The Lutangans, because of their nomadic character and love of the sea, wondered from coast to coast around the island in search of rich fishing grounds.

It was only during the Spanish era, that the Lutangans had started to live semi – permanently along the sea shores. Then as years passed, the Tausogs, Samals and the other tribes came to live in the island, which was later named Olutanga after the Lutangan tribe. The first Christians who came to the island were hunters in search of wild life such as wild boars, deer, tamaraws, etc.

Later in the 1920’s, the Cebuanos, Ilongos, and other tribe from Luzon and Visayas came to the island to settle and farm. In 1948, the opening of the Hercules Lumber Company in Subanipa (the trading center of the island now renamed Solar) paved the way for the steady flow of people from the Visayas and Luzon. The establishment of the Lumber Company in the island and the influx of settlers reduced the verdant forest into an agricultural land.

POLITICAL BACKGROUND

Olutanga (the whole island) was formerly a regular barangay of the Municipality of Alicia. On November 17, 1957, Olutanga barangay was elevated into a municipal status, with a juridical personality by virtue of Executive Order # 274, enunciated then by the late President Carlos P. Gracia. Originally, Olutanga was attributed to the whole island itself. However, ten years later on May 18, 1967 the barangay of Mabuhay on the north-eastern side of the island, was created into a municipality by virtue of Republic Act No. 4876. Twenty (20) years later, on November 11, 1977, the Municipality of Talusan was created by virtue of Presidential Degree No. 1237 signed by President Ferdinand E. Marcos. This new Municipality was carved from the Municipality of Olutanga representing the northwestern sector of the island.

The first appointed Municipal Mayor was Honorable Eufemio Quijano. He was later elected as Municipal Mayor, but he served only served for one term. The next Mayor elected was Hon. Gonzalo B. Pidor who served for two terms from 1964 to 1971. He was followed by Hon. Cecilio C. Macion, 1972 to the EDSA Revolution era. Then, in the 1993 local election Dr. Joel G. Capotulan was elected as the Mayor to the present.

The Blessed Helena Kiosk is a solitary kiosk outside the Holy Spirit Novitiate compound in Calapan City, Philippines. Still a part of the Novitiate property, this kiosk was made on 2003 during the Year of Grace when the SVD Founder Saint Arnold Janssen was canonizaed in Rome. It was designed by one of the SVD novices, Frt. Pelermo Suganob, SVD.

This kiosk is named after Blessed Maria Helena, the Blue Sister Superior General who became a Pink Sister. Novices usually have their dyads and hetero group sharings here.

I could not count how many web directories I have visited. When I was still a newbie blogger, I prepared a long list of web directories and submitted my young blog to them. I have been to the different places in the Philippines, practically from A (as in Abra) to Z ( as in Zamboanga). I have conquered mountains, explored caves, photographed peoples and swam our seas. But still, I have to point out out: Davao remains the best place in the Philippines.

Maraming dahilan why many people like Davao. As varied as the reasons and factors may be, still they all summed up to one thing- quality of life: The air is fresh. The city is clean and green. There is real abundance of the freshest harvests from the land and sea. To top it all, the quality of potable water is among the best in the world.

There are many restaurants in Davao that serve unforgettable so-tu-kil (sugba, tula, kilaw) dishes. Marami pang mga eat all you can na pwede mong puntahan!!!

Crocodile Park is one of the most visited parks in the city.

If you go to Davao, do not forget to visit the eagle parks. Medyo malayo nga lang sa city, but the visit to Malagos Garden is worth it.

Pearl Farm Resort lies in a secluded island off the coast of Davao city. This 11-hectare spread was once a pearl farm, where thousands of white-lipped oysters, transported from the Sulu Sea, were cultivated for their pink, white and gold pearls.

Greetings from Davao!

For the past few days, I was always on the go. For your information, I already left St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish of Cainta after Easter. They prepared a program for me and that I really appreciated. Thank you to the many kind souls in the parish.

I went home to Davao last Easter Tuesday to also prepare the things necessary for my thanksgiving mass. The support coming from my relatives, neighbors and even of my parish was very overwhelming.

After my thanksgiving mass, I also traveled to Clarin, Misamis Occidental for the thanksgiving mass of Fr. Jaekel Solde, SVD. It was a very long travel, grabe! Maraming salamat talaga kay Fr. Sam Clarin, SVD who offered the car of the vocation office. Nadaanan ko ang Marilog District of Davao City (this place could be the next Baguio and Tagaytay of the Philippines), Bukidnon (wonderful mountains!), Cagayan de Oro City (beautiful cathedral), Iligan (we had to detour because of the bombing done sa isang tulay dito) and marami pang iba.

JOHN PAUL II TO BE BEATIFIED

OMG! It began with a Polish News Report in the Polish daily “Dziennik” and spread throughout the blogosphere almost faster than lightning, the late beloved Servant of God John Paul II will be beatified next year on April 2, 2010. He died on April 2, 2005 at 9:37 p.m. in his private apartment shortly after asking “Let me go to my Father’s House”.

This reliable Polish Daily report indicates that the Congregation for the Cause of the Saints has already concluded the process. It began by special dispensation on June 28, 2005, only two months after John Paul's death rather than the standard five years. It could be recall that during his funderal in April 2005, the faithful held up placards calling for him to be made a "Santo Subito" - a saint immediately.

OMG (again)! This news excites me! Surely, the whole world will look forward to this event!

DINNER FOR A CAUSE

Several SVD confreres, especially overseas, wanted to see the Dinner for a Cause held at the Divine Word Seminary of Tagaytay last February 13. It was initiated for the renovation of the seminary roof, especially the Holy Spirit chapel. Nag-le-leak na kasi kapag umuulan (doon pa banda sa Blessed Sacrament). So, ayan na, ito na po.

MY BIRTHDAY MESSAGE

Birthday ko today. I am now 28 years old. This is the first year that I am celebrating my birthday as a priest. Parang kailan lang I could still remember the young boy playing with all the kids in our neighborhood. Wonderful! Ang layo na pala ng aking narating, and yet I am very much aware that a new missionary journey will unfold in the next few months for me.

Nais kong magpasalamat sa mga taong naniniwala sa akin, sa mga taong tumutulong sa akin, sa mga taong nagmamahal sa akin. Salamat din sa lahat ng mga taong bumati sa akin at sa mga taong nag-alay ng kanilang mga dasal for me. God bless you po.

Thank you to all my teachers, my formators, my mentors and sa lahat ng mga nakasama ko sa aking seminary formation. Special mention goes to Fr. Teody Taneo, the vocation director who found my way in the SVD. Kung hindi dahil sa kanya, wala ako ngayon dito.

Thank you also to my family sa magandang pagpapalaki sa akin. Kahit di ako lumaki (hehe), I have grown up naman. Haha. I also include them in my prayers.

I thank God for calling me. I know very well that I am still very young and marami pa akong kakaining bigas and so I rely so much on God’s grace daily. My friends, please double your prayers for me. On May 20, I will start my new missionary journey at Ulotanga Island, Ipil, Zamboanga.

Friends, do not worry. I will be okay. God is already there in my mission area, way, way before my arrival. I wish to celebrate my birthday in Zamboanga next year. Aabot tayo diyan. Basta God ordains, God sustains.

MAY BUKAS PA

I am following a very inspiring telenovela these days. Yes, I am one of the million avid viewers of May Bukas Pa (There Is Still Tomorrow), a drama series which started airing on February 2, 2009 after TV Patrol World at ABS-CBN. It is based on the 1955 Spanish film Marcelino pan y vino.

The story is about Santino (Ziejan Jaranilla) . When he was just a baby, Santino was abandoned by his mother in a monastery. He was raised by the caring priests Father Anthony (Jaime Fabregas), Father Jose (Dominic Ochoa), and Father Ringo (Lito Pimentel). As a young boy, Santino will find a friend in a mysterious person which he calls “Bro” (shortened for brother) who will help him change the lives of the people in their town. Wikipedia says that May Bukas Pa is a story that is set to open the eyes of viewers that there will always be hope amidst trials and difficulties. Miracles don’t just fall from heaven but comes to those who keep their faith.

In terms of Nationwide ratings released by TNS, May Bukas Pa reached a whooping 40.9% surpassing its pilot rating and currently the highest rated Primetime show for 2009. Recently, ABS-CBN Management decided to extend the series for 20 weeks.

Hands-down ako sa teleserye na ito. Ito dapat ang mga pinapakita ng tv natin, di yong lagi na lang sex and violence.

However, from the point of view ng isang pari, may mga interesting comments ako sa pilot episode.

1) The priests are Franciscans but the parish is named after Santo Tomas, a Dominican. Hehehehe.

2) Noong piyesta ng Santo Tomas, green ang stole na ginamit ng pari. No, white dapat pag piyesta ng santo. Hehehe.

3) Noong nangumpisal ang mga prayle, white ang gamit ni Father. Hehehe, pag kumpisal dapat violet.

But all in all, ang ganda ng show....Sana magkaroon din ng DVD nito. I want to have a collection of this show. I RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE WHO ARE IN SEARCH OF CHRISTIAN VALUES-ORIENTED PROGRAM.

ASH WEDNESDAY TRIVIA

I noticed even as a young child that some of the largest crowds in the year will show up to receive ashes on Ash Wednesday, even if it is not a holy day of obligation. Many Filipinos could not afford to let go of Ash Wednesday without a trip to church to be marked with an ashen cross on their foreheads. Even people who seldom come to Church for the rest of the year make a concerted effort to come for ashes (which is good!).

And how would you know if the person seated next to you in the jeepney is not a Catholic? He or she makes a point of telling you that you have something on your forehead, assuming you would want to wash it off. Hehe. But many Catholics wear that smudge faithfully all day. Happy Ash Wednesday!!!

1. The origin of the custom of using ashes in religious ritual can be found in the Old Testament. The prophet Jeremiah, for example, calls for repentance this way: "O daughter of my people, gird on sackcloth, roll in the ashes" (Jer 6:26). The prophet Isaiah, on the other hand, critiques the use of sackcloth and ashes as inadequate to please God (Is 58:5). (Perhaps) the best known example of repentance in the Old Testament is that of the King of Nineveh: “He rose from his throne, laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in the ashes" (Jon 3:6).

2.In the New Testament, Jesus refers to the use of sackcloth and ashes as signs of repentance: "Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty deeds done in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented in sackcloth and ashes" (Mt 11:21, Lk 10:13).

3.Thomas Talley, an expert on the history of the liturgical year, says that the first clearly datable liturgy for Ash Wednesday that provides for sprinkling ashes is in the Romano-Germanic pontifical of 960. Before that time, ashes had been used as a sign of admission to the Order of Penitents.

4.As early as the sixth century, the Spanish Mozarabic rite calls for signing the forehead with ashes when admitting a gravely ill person to the Order of Penitents.

5. At the beginning of the 11th century, Abbot Aelfric notes that it was customary for all the faithful to take part in a ceremony on the Wednesday before Lent that included the imposition of ashes. Near the end of that century, Pope Urban II called for the general use of ashes on that day. Only later did this day come to be called Ash Wednesday.

6. At first, clerics and men had ashes sprinkled on their heads, while women had the sign of the cross made with ashes on their foreheads. Eventually, of course, the ritual used with women came to be used for men as well.

7. In the 12th century the rule developed that the ashes were to be created by burning palm branches from the previous Palm Sunday. Many parishes today invite parishioners to bring such palms to church before Lent begins and have a ritual burning of the palms after Mass.

8. Originally, the marking of ashes is related with baptism. Those who had committed serious sins confessed their sins to the bishop or his representative and were assigned a penance that was to be carried out over a period of time. Penance this time was called “second baptism.” With the gradual disappearance of the Order of Penitents, the use of ashes became detached from its original context. The focus on personal penance and the Sacrament of Penance continued in Lent, but the connection to Baptism was no longer obvious to most people. This is reflected in the formula that came to be associated with the distribution of ashes: "Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return."

9. The Second Vatican Council (1962-65) called for the renewal of Lent, recovering its ancient baptismal character. Since Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, it naturally is also the beginning to recover a baptismal focus. One hint of this is the second formula that is offered for the imposition of ashes: "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel." Though it doesn't explicitly mention Baptism, it recalls our baptismal promises to reject sin and profess our faith. It is a clear call to conversion, to that movement away from sin and toward Christ that we have to embrace over and over again through our lives.

10. There is a certain irony in the gospel reading for today, which tells us to wash our faces so that we do not appear to be doing penance on the day that we go around with "dirt" on our foreheads. This is just another way Jesus is telling us not to perform religious acts for public recognition. We don't wear the ashes to proclaim our holiness but to acknowledge that we are a community of sinners in need of repentance and renewal.

When we receive ashes on our foreheads, we remember who we are.
We remember that we are creatures of the earth ("Remember that you are dust").
We remember that we are mortal beings ("and to dust you will return").

We remember that we are baptized.

We remember that we are people on a journey of conversion ("Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel").

We remember that we are members of the body of Christ (and that smudge on our foreheads will proclaim that identity to others, too).

I'M LEAVING TAGAYTAY

I received a call the other day (February 11) from the Fr.Heinz Kulueke,SVD, the Provincial Superior of the SVD Philippine Southern Province. Finally,he related to me that I will be sent to Nuestra Señora De Los Remedios Parish of Subanipa, Olutanga Island in Zamboanga Sibugay which is under the Prelature of Ipil. So,immediately after our graduation this March 28, I will be leaving Tagaytay. I will stay in Cainta until Easter Monday. Then go to Davao for my thanksgiving mass. I will go to Ipil come third week of May.

HE KNEW THE TIME OF HIS DEATH!

Did you ever know of someone who prayed the rosary faithfully and eventually knew the time of his/her death?

I do. Yes, I do.

In fact, I am very close to the family. This family gave me a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary last 2005 for my apostolate area. However, I was not given a specific weekend assignment because I was appointed to our SVD Mission Partners. So, the Blessed Virgin stayed in our seminarians' dining hall. Last year, the image was lost for several months but was returned later (nobody claimed to have borrowed it). At present, the image is in my room.

Let us call him "Tatang." Tatang was a devout Catholic who prayed the rosary. In fact, "Ima" (his wife) married him because "he was religious and his devotion to the rosary impressed me a lot."

Few years ago, Tatang became sick. More than 70 years old already, he often stayed in bed or at times, he would watch tv while in his rocking chair.

Later last year, he began to mention the date "November 4" and started reminding the members of his family, "Mahal ka ni Mama Mary" (Mama Mary Loves You). Whenever his daughter Agnes enters the room, he would make the gesture of the sign of the cross and would assert that he sees the Blessed Virgin.

And he looks forward with joy, "Kaylan ba darating ang November 4?"...and everybody in the house were clueless about it.

On November 4, Tatang died peacefully...He died peacefully on the date he had been mentioning. It was only then that his family members understood. Mama Mary granted him the privilege to know the time of his death and Tatang looked forward to it with joyful anticipation.

Today, the family continued their apostolate of giving Mama Mary images to propagate the devotion to her.

I PERSONALLY, INTIMATELY KNOW THIS FAMILY....AND THEY ALSO WANTED TO LET OTHER PEOPLE KNOW THE ABUNDANT GRACES MARY BESTOWS ON HER CHILDREN WHO ARE DEVOTED TO PRAYING THE ROSARY.

SVD JOKES #28: FIRST TIME

This is shared to me by another SVD missionary: Together with another SVD, they were sent to a foreign country. It was both their first time to ride an international flight and confessed that they were really ignorant inside the plane.
The stewardess went to them and offered, “Sir, would you like chicken or beef? Coffee or softdrink?”

The two missionaries, thinking that they are to pay for the order, made a polite gesture, “No, thanks.”

Several hours later, another stewardess came and made the same offer, “Sir, would you like chicken or beef? Coffee or softdrink?”

Still clueless that meals were part of the flight payment, they again politely refused, “No thanks.”

Another Filipino noticed the missionaries. So, this Filipino whispered to them, “the meals are free here. There is no extra charge!”

The two missionaries immediately stood up and faster-than-lightning called the stewardess and said, “Miss, chicken with two extra rice please.”

Fr. Flor Lagura, SVD shared about the story of Fr. Robert Winkler, SVD. “Fr. Winkler was a German missionary to Mindoro. In the 1940’s, Fr. Winkler had to hike from Calapan, the provincial capital, to Bulalacao, the southernmost town. A distance of roughly 200 kilometers over hills, mountains and rivers.

One night, the Bongabon River raged, so the good missionary decided to wait for the dawn cradled in the safety of a tree towering over the riverbank. The next morning, he was shocked to see a huge crocodile awaiting him at the tree’s base. Fortunately, Fr. Winkler – being more patient than the reptile – lived not only to tell the story but also spend many years of his life in building up God’s kingdom.” (The Word in Other Words 2002, May 9)

“Setswana”, the language spoken in Botswana, is quieted complicated. One day, while visiting people in the fields, I scouted a group of women harvesting sorghum. Very articulately I greeted them, “Dumelang Bomme” (the usual greeting). In chorus they respond “Dumela Rra.”

Admiring the abundant harvest, I exclaimed, “Bomme, mabele a lona a matona thata!”

Their facial expressions and the silence were enough to tell me I was in trouble. I repeated what I said trying to make myself clear. And one of them remarked, “Ah, mabele.”

I said, “ee mma” (yes madam) pointing at the robust sorghum harvested. Then a thunderous laughter broke out. Trying not to embarrass me, the old man that the word “mabele” has two completely different meanings: If your accent is deep, it means sorghum, but if it is high, it means a woman’s breasts. It was clear then that when I spoke the first time, I was in effect saying, “Women, your breasts are enormous!” (The Word in Other Words 2002, June 2)

SVD JOKES #24: HELP! HELP!

In one of my summer apostolates, our assistant parish priest was going to be transferred to another place. So, on his last day in the parish, the people decided that we organize a picnic in the river as our token of thanksgiving for the missionary service he had done for the parish.
While in the river, I had so much fun swimming together with another SVD seminarian (You should know I am a swimmer!). This assistant parish priest also wanted to come to us. So, he swam going to our direction but was carried away by the mighty waters, until he reach a whirlpool where he could no longer move himself. He had already drank so much water. So, he shouted to us, “Help! Help!”
Knowing that the assistant parish priest doesn’t speak English to us but in Visayan language, we ignored him and even laughed at him because we thought that he was only playing jokes with us.
After few seconds, he already shouted for help in Visayan dialect: “Tabang! Tabang!”
We immediately came to his rescue!

SVD JOKES #23: THANKS! THANKS!

When I was a postulant, I remembered very well a serious sermon from an SVD deacon which turned out to be a light moment for all of us gathered. This deacon asked us to look at the cross and try to see the letters on it aside from the INRI.
Then, he himself answered that from the cross we can see the letter T and Y – which, according to him, means “thank you.” Then, he looked around the chapel for a cross to illustrate his point. To his great surprise, the cross we had in the chapel was only a wooden cross without the image of crucified Jesus (which formed the letter Y).
Since the visual cross in our chapel only showed the letter T, the deacon immediately quipped: “Ah, your cross here only shows the letter T – that means ‘thanks!’”

As a deacon assigned in Cainta, I had to immediately go back to Tagaytay every Sunday afternoon to catch up our evening prayers. One time, I was racing against time at the metro rail transit (MRT) station. There were so many people pushing each other at the Ortigas Station while waiting for the train.
When the train going to Pasay-Taft already arrived, I immediately pushed myself inside with the only intention to secure myself a place. Suddenly, I noticed all ladies, girls and old women were all eyes on me. I was inside the women’s booth.

I BAPTIZED MICHAEL PHELPS!!!

MY NEW YEAR MESSAGE

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

At the breaking forth of the New Year, I was at St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish in Cainta, Rizal. Fr. Manuel "Bong" Bongayan, SVD presided the Holy Mass with Fr. Leo Schmitt, Fr. Martin Mandin and me as concelebrants. The Shrine was filled with people. Even the slightest rainshower did not dampen the spirit of our many parishioners who had to stay outside since they could no longer be accommodated inside. Ang dami talagang tao!

After the Mass, the four of us priests had our media noche. Fr. Martz and Fr. Bong teased Fr. Leo that perhaps at this time, many people should know that St. Arnold Janssen Shrine is a Catholic parish. We do not have cross pa kasi at the top of our Church building. That is why, some outsiders have mistaken the Shrine for a Protestant Church or church of any other denominations. Hehe. That will be one of our projects for the New Year as we continue with the Shrine construction.

The year 2009 will make a big difference in my life. For one, I will be graduating soon (yahoo!!!). Second, I will be leaving Tagaytay (also soon). Third, I will go (at last!) to my mission area in the South and that exites me a lot. I guess I knew the area (thanks to the leakage!) but I could not reveal it yet. I still have to wait for the formal announcement.

Basta, Happy New Year na lang po sa ating lahat! God sustained us last year. So, God will also sustain us this year. Maraming salamat sa lahat ng mga nagdasal para sa akin, nagmessage at nagbigay ng comments (through text, friendster, facebook, multiply, etc.) at sa lahat ng nagbigay sa akin ng mga regalo. Hehe.

MY CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

Greetings in the Divine Word!

For several days now, I have not accessed my friendster, multiply and facebook accounts since I am very busy attending to my first priorities in the ministry. I am now on my way to Tagaytay (I will have 8 pm mass) and I just dropped by an internet cafe here in Taft to extend my greetings of a Happy, Happy Christmas to all.

I am staying in St. Arnold Janssen Shrine Parish of Cainta, Rizal for this Christmas season. We are four SVD priests here (Fr. Manuel Bongayan, Fr. Martin Mandin and Fr. Leo Schmitt). Since we are a many, we are also invited by other parishes to say masses in nearby (and not-so-near parishes), kaya naman in just a span of one week, I have been to many parishes in Antipolo and even Pasig.

Hahaha, I have a very funny experience on my way to Sta. Lucia. I was in an FX and I had an old fat lady for a seatmate. Masikip ang front seat, di ba? This woman was praying fervently to while away the traffic. Beautiful sight. All of a sudden, I received a call and my cellphone (in its silent mode) vibrated to the highest level. Hehehe my cellphone was under my pocket and so I was at first trying to ignore it but I noticed the old lady also "vibrated." Nakiliti sa vibration ng cp. Then she looked at me, laughed and said defensively, "akala ko kasi, hinipuan mo ako eh" (I won't translate it in English ha).

So far, I don't far liturgical bloopers.

In one parish, sabi noong isang parishioner, "Father, you are the handsome version of Manny Pacquaio." Hahahaha. Smile na lang ako. Another one said happily, "You are the epitome of Manny Pacquaio." Hahahahaha. Ano yon?

Last December 20, Saturday, I went to Lipa to visit sana Mt. Carmel but it was not materialized. I was catching up for my 6 pm Mass kasi in Tagaytay. At 8 pm, I also had my Mass at our Divine Word Seminary.

I wished to stay longer to chat with my brother scholastics and the Sunday Group but I was in a hurry to go back to Manila for my ABS-CBN Healing Eucharist stint with Fr. Aris Martin, SVD the following day. He was the presider. I was the homilist.

This coming December 27, I am going to Laoag to attend also his Thanksgiving Mass. December 29 will also be the Thanksgiving Mass of Fr. Gil Dulay, SVD in Sorsongon.

I thank God for my priestly vocation this Christmas. Please also storm heaven with your prayers for my perseverance.

By the way, I would like to also thank the cashier (kung sino man siya) of People's Park in the Sky for his honesty. I was with the St. Arnold Janssen Knights of the Altar there last December 19. We were billed 225 pesos. I gave the cashier a thousand peso bill.

After thirty minutes tour, I realized di ko pala nakuha ang sukli ko! But thank God, the cashier immediately recognized me when we were about to go out and gave me my change even before I could ask for it. Maraming salamat po.

Friends, don't ever forget to thank God for all the blessings we received (and we will still receive) this year. Thank God also for Christmas, that God come in our midst, "socialize" with us, and even lay down His life for us. Imagine, kung walang Pasko, wala ring Christmas bonus. Hehe.

To all of you, Merry, Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. It is my fervent wish that all of us will be happy and holy in the next year ahead.

Salitang Buhay is a religious program anchored on God’s Word which applies to various sectors of society: spiritual, moral, economic, and political. It is inspired by Christ’s words: “Everyone who listens to my words and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on rock.” (Matthew 7:24).

It was my second time to guest on "Salitang Buhay". I arrived earlier than the call time. I immediately saw "Salitang Buhay" anchors Miss Ilsa Reyes and Fr. Jerome Marquez, SVD, and we immediately went inside the studio.

The topic that evening was all about our vocation story.The jokes of Fr. Bel are all new to me and he delivered them on the spot. Ang galing! I enjoyed the evening.

Fr. Manuel Gatchalian, SVD was also a very inspiring guest. I met him before when I was still a college seminarian in Christ the King. I could not forget him because he cried during his homily when he talked about his experience of being with the poor. Even during our interview, I noticed he was teary-eyed while sharing on air his experience with the poor in Angola during the civil war.

Last Friday, while checking my multiply account, I received a text message from a high school classmate that her friends in her Friendster account were down to 6, from the original 50+. I only laughed at her because I was thinking that somebody might have hacked her account.

When I logged in on my Friendster account, lo and behold, my 1,088 friends were down to 54! I panicked! According to Friendster, it was just a power failure that caused the errors in their databases. No need to worry about missing friends and access problems because they were doing their part to resolve the issue in the next 24 hours.

However, a lot of Friendster fanatics were already pissed off and disappointed. It has been three days and i still have not recovered my friends. I googled to investigate and I found out that a hacker named h4xOr-nytmare infiltrated their database.

IS THIS TRUE???

For the time being, I do not log in my account. The Friendster team might be recovering the losses that was done.

SVD JOKES #20: FR. BEL’S REALIZATION

In the Yapak Magazine, Fr. Bel San Luis, SVD was asked about his most remarkable/unforgettable experience in his seminary years in Christ the King. This is his answer, “It was the realization that the Lord really called me to become an SVD priest despite my weaknesses, naughtiness and clandestine activities which could have cost me my vocation had I been discovered. For instance, my close friend and I would escape at night after our Prefect had finished patrolling our dorms. There were no security guards then manning the gate. We would arrange our beds with mosquito nets down as though we were occupying then and go to Cubao, enjoy a meal or a movie then return home undetected. To cover up, we saw to it that we were in the chapel on time for Morning Prayer! Incidentally, we had to discontinue those late night outs when fierce German Shepherd dogs were let loose at night. (Yapak Magazine, vol. 4, no. 1, 15)

P.S. While reading this one, I could not help but intimately relate myself with Fr. Bel’s story. But during my time, there were no more German Shepherds. Hehe. Good thing I was not caught. Hehe. I remembered one time when I was the class servant of the fourth year college class, Fr. Eli Mata, SVD (our Prefect of Discipline) complained to me with his classic high pitch voice: “Felmar, yong classmate mo, lumabas na di nagpaalam, nakasalubong ko sa Cubao, di man lang nag-good morning!” (“Felmar, your classmate went out without permission. I met him in Cubao and he did not even bother to greet me good morning!”)

SVD JOKES #19: WEIRD EXPERIENCE OF FR. BEL

I am sure many seminarians could relate to the story related by Fr. Bel San Luis, SVD. It was about his “weird” experience when he was still a seminarian in Christ the King. It happened during examination days. He said, “Since, we had curfew in study period at night and I needed more time to cram, I would go to the toilet, lock myself up in a stall and study through the night. When the Prefect of Discipline came around to patrol and knock on the doors, I would flush the water tank, pretending I was answering the call of nature!” (Yapak Magazine, vol. 4, no. 1, 15)

SVD JOKES #18: PICTURE THIS OUT

In 1976, there was only one trip to Barrio Barahan in Mindoro. Being the only trip for the day, the jeepney was understandably filled with passengers up to the top. Fr. Fred Mislang, SVD related that while negotiating a rough stretch, a man with his son in a tow, waived his hands to indicate his intention to ride the already over-loaded vehicle.
The driver obliged but told the man, “Tsong, pwede bang wag nang isama ang bata’t wala ng lugar?” (Sir, could you leave your child behind. There’s no more space). So the man told his son to stay behind, but then the son wanted to come along by all means. When the jeep moved on, the child ran after them. His father kept yelling at him to stay behind, “Maiwan ka na,” but the child kept on running, crying and shouting to us, “Sama ako, itay, sama ako.”
Finally the Father relented. He requested the driver to stop, went down and picked his son up and carried him with one hand while he hung on to the jeepney with the other. (The Word in Other Words 2001, March 8)

SVD JOKES #17: FATHER DEACON

Some people actually do not know the distinction between a priest and a deacon: this is the observation of Rev. Jaekel Solde, my deacon classmate. Diaconate is the last stage for priesthood. A Deacon is called a Reverend, while the priest is called a Father.
In one instance, Rev. Jaekel met this woman who kept on calling him “Father, Father.” He explained to her the difference and insisted that the woman call him “Reverend” instead of “Father.” After a short explanation, the woman exclaimed, “So, deacon pa po pala kayo Father?” (So, you are still a deacon, Father?”)

FROM THE MISSIONS #4: KAMBAL NA KAMALASAN

Pagkatapos ng halos isang buwan sa Bandundu, biahe ulit kami pabalik ng Kinshasa upang dumalo sa taunang "retreat" bilang mga SVDs. Natutulog pa ang buong bayan ng aming lisanin ang bayan ng Bandundu. Maayos naman ang simula ng aming paglalakbay, bagama't umuulan ng panahong iyon nakatawid pa rin kami sa ilog na walang aberya. Subalit pagkatapos ng halos isang oras, biglang umusok ang aming sasakyan, "over-heat," sabi ni Fr. Loie (paring pinoy). Wala rin lang magawa kundi ang maghintay, inaliw na lang namin ang aming mga sarili sa pagkuha ng mga litrato at pakikipag- usap sa mga bata sa katabing komunidad. Ang ibang kasama namin ay naglakad pabalik upang maghanap ng signal at humingi ng tulong sa mga kapatid naming pari sa Bandundu.

Pagkatapos ng limang oras, dumating na rin sa wakas ang toyota na hihila sa aming sasakyan pabalik ng Bandundu. Sa kasamaang palad, masyadong mabilis ang takbo ng sasakyan. Saan ka ba naman nakakita ng sasakyan na may tow pero nag-oovertake sa iba pang mga sasakyan? Hmmnn, dito lang so far. Ayun, sa bilis ng takbo, bigla na lang umekis- ekis ang sasakyan at bumaliktad ang aming mundo.

Mahirap mang isipin, naaksidente na pala kami. Sumadsad ang sasakyan, nagkabasag- basag ang mga salamin, at naghalo ang balat sa tinalupan. Nakapuwesto ako sa gilid kung saan tumagilid ang sasakyan, ayun, ginawa akong airbag ng dalawa ko pang kasama. Hindi agad ako nakalabas, well, dahil pinakiramdaman ko muna kong buo pa ba ang katawan ko.

Pangalawa, hinanap ko pa ang camera ko upang ibigay kay Fr. Noy upang kuhanan kami ng picture kasama ni Fr. Loie na hindi rin agad nakalabas ng sasakyan. Si Fr. Noy kasi ang pinaka-unang lumabas upang "hilahin daw kami palabas at baka sumabog ang sasakyan." Masyadong nagpapanood ng pelikulang pinoy ang klasmeyt ko.hehe.

Awa ng Diyos, wala namang masyadong nasaktan sa amin. Maliban sa ilang pasa, galos at bugbug sa katawan, maayos naman kaming lahat. Pagkatapos ng "initial shock" picturan time na ulit kami ni Fr. Noy. Mga Pinoy talaga, naaksidente na, nakangiti at nagpapapicture pa.

Pero pagkatapos ng ilang oras, dun pa lang nagsimulang sumakit ang aming katawan at maalalang naaksidente pala kami. Hanggang ngayon, kuwentuhang aksidente pa rin kami. Pero iisa ang aming realisasyon, hindi pa namin panahon, marami pang plano ang Diyos para sa aming misyon dito sa Congo.

FROM THE MISSIONS #3: A MOTHER'S LETTER

Dearest Fr. Judy,

I felt like a proud mother reading her son's letter far away from home when I was reading your blog at Multiply. You have grown. You have spread your wings and you are soaring like an eagle on your new assignment. I cannot help but feel very proud of you.

It was like watching a movie or a documentary reading your wonderful account of your new life in the barrios. I am pleased that you met people who, I believe, will support you and teach you more lessons in your life as a young priest. It is also very heartwarming to note that you have tremendously matured in your priesthood while there. I guess, had you stayed longer here in the Philippines, it would not be the same. Sometimes God puts us in unfamiliar territories with much of the unexpected before us. Sometimes we wonder what is there for us? But in His awesome wisdom, He has planned it all out for the best. And I can see in your struggles coupled with your perseverance and enthusiasm how much the whole experience is molding you into a stronger, more sensitive, compassionate and definitely, a more effective missionary.

Do continue what you are doing. I am really very pleased to hear that you are enjoying the Liturgy of the Hours... Just think that we are doing it together and I am sure it will uplift your heart that I am here doing the same as you are as we say our prayers together. Do continue touching base with the people in your community. When you were telling me about how you cried about how indifferent the people were in your mass, be assured that God has been consoled by your Eucharistic sacrifice. I too cry everyday in my heart when I see people (although there is definitely much more of them, in terms of number as compared to your barrio people there) receiving Our Lord in communion not really knowing it is the Lord coming to them and so they do it out of obligation and sometimes without reverence!

But we have to persevere... We have to go on doing everything for His Greater Glory!... Do continue learning and perfecting the language. It will be your connection with the people... Do continue learning from your American parish priest. I am sure, time and age has given him much wisdom which you can learn from... Do continue experimenting in the kitchen. Winning hearts is really through the stomach most of the time (Hehehe!)... Do continue expressing your feelings through your letters and photos. Even if we do not reply, know that it makes us aware of what is happening to you and it definitely brings you much closer to our hearts....

So much for my homily... Rest assured you are always in my daily prayers...

FRIENDSTER DIRECTORY: TAGA-KIBLAWAN

The name Kiblawan was derived from the combined name of two lovers known as Kib and Lawan. Lawan was a daughter of a Kaulo Chieftain living in Tumbag (sitio of Kiblawan) while Kib was an ordinary person living in the same Tribal community. Their love life was strongly opposed by the parents of Lawan, that lead unto the untimely death of both lovers. Their aborted engagement won sympathy over the people in the tribal community, accounting it as a significant event. Kib and Lawan became the most popular combination opted to name the place as Kiblawan. Kiblawan was the name of the Barangay now known as Barangay Poblacion prior to the creation of Kiblawan as Municipality on June 18, 1966. The seat of Government was established in the-said barangay hence, the name Kiblawan of the Municipality was adopted.

In the year 1966, the municipality was created by virtue of Executive Order No, !43, signed by his Excellency President Diosdado Macapagal, but it was revoked by the Supreme Court declaring the act of creating a Municipality through an Executive Order as null and void. The approval of the Republic Act No. 4748 on J.une 18, 1966 finally made Kiblawan as Municipality. Kiblawan is one of the fifteen (15) Municipalities that composes the Province of Davao del Sur.

According to 2000 Census, Kiblawan has a population of 41, 275 in 8, 339 household. It is politically subdivided into 30 barangays.

RIP, FR. NARDS

Last Sunday, October 19, Frt. Ronrey announced that the new issue of the Yapak Magazine of Christ the King was sent to our Tagaytay community. He said that one of the contents was the interview done by seminarians Kevin Pizarras and Henry Paul Ramilo to Fr. Leonardo Estioko, SVD.

Surprising, I thought. For several years, the Yapak Magazine begged Fr. Nards for an interview but he always declined. This semester, he granted the magazine reporters an exclusive interview. "Signs of the times..." my friend commented. Anyway, in that interview, he was asked, "Father, any last words before we part ways?"

Fr. Nards exclaimed, "Ha? Ano yang last words, last words? Mahirap yan.(laughs)"

And it happened. October 21, at 3:45 pm, he died. Lung cancer. May he rest in peace...

I was a college seminarian when Fr. Nards was the Rector of Christ the King. The info and the whole alley of the Buttenbruch building were then filled with bones for Sacra. Every after vacation, he would ask me for "pasalubong", not for him but for his beloved Sacra...He loved Sacra so much.

But more than his love for the dogs is his dedication to teaching. He was one of my favorite teachers in Christ the King (Fr. Nards, Bro. Romy, Mr. Racho). He was awarded the Most Outstanding Filipino SVD Professor of Philosophy last August 28, 2008. For him, being a teacher is more important than being a rector. He said, "Anybody can be a rector but not everybody can be a teacher (in Philosophy)."

I remember Fr. Nards with fondness. I was a college student in Christ the King before. Katatapos lang ng ozone disco tragedy and being the rector, he ordered that fire alarms be also put up in the seminary.

But since the fire alarms were installed in the hallways where seminarians usually pass, the naughty ones playfully turned it on, creating noise and commotion during siesta. Grabe! One seminarian even jumped out of the window from the third floor!

It was also made an alternate bell during rising to make sure seminarians really wake up.

Hehe. Those were the days...

Fr. Nards then ordered that nobody should make prank jokes on the fire alarms. For one month, the seminarians did not hear anything from the fire signal device.

However, one siesta time, the fire signal alarmed again. The seminarians were in panic! Some nerbyoso seminarians started to shout and packed their things.

Then one seminarian went upstairs and informed us: "Please don't panic! There is no fire. The fire alarm button was only touched accidentally."

And one of the seminary bully angrily asked, "...and who the hell touched the fire alarm button?"

The seminarian immediately answered: "Fr. Nards!"

FROM THE MISSIONS #2: FUNERALS IN NEW ZEALAND

This week has been a very busy week for me. I had my first two funerals here in the parish. I realized that here Funerals are very special occasions. I have to go to the family twice to arrange the Funeral liturgy. Here in the Funeral liturgy, the family has a say on how the funeral mass would be conducted. We have to show them the options that they have and that includes the readings for the mass and also whatever they wanted to include in the mass like Eulogies, Special Music, etc.

In the liturgy, we have a adapted a policy of trying to accomodate any request of the family. Since it is a very special occasion, we would like to be open to all possibilities and to be as welcoming as possible, since here in New Zealand, Catholics are in the minority, we would want to present that we Catholics are very welcoming and accomodating.

But sometimes, I find it quite strange about some things that have happened in the two funerals that I have presided. Last Monday, we celebrated a funeral of a sister of a parishoner that have died in Germany but the family wanted her to be buried here in NZ so before burying we had a Funeral Mass for her done. Everything seemed to worked out fine until the Eulogy part after Communion. Her brother who led the Eulogies requested that since her sister loved Kenya so much because she was there for a long time, asked us that we stand as the NATIONAL ANTHEM OF KENYA IS BEING PLAYED! Well, I was quite startled and very much surprised from my chair, however, I tried not to show it. They also played some folk songs from Kenya and other things that are Kenyan. Anyway, I was relieved that those attended the funeral really appreciated the service. I think they really do it this way here.

Another incident happened when I presided another funeral mass yesterday (Thursday), I was informed that the family wanted to play three songs during the mass because according to them they were the favorite songs of the one who passed away. At first, the mass went on well. Then as we have agreed, after my homily the family would like to play a song in order to help us reflect. So at the end of my homily, I told the congregation to remain seated and be silent for a time of reflection. Then the song that they played turned out to be: "COME FLY WITH ME" by FRANK SINATRA. I was trying my best to hide my laughter beause of the solemnity of the occassion.

Well anyway, funerals definitely vary from culture to culture. There are some aspects that I would find very strange at least in my point of view. But I think this is just another challenge of being a missionary here in New Zealand.

Fr. Elmer Ibarra, SVD is a Filipino Missionary assigned to New Zealand. He was ordained on February 2007. He is part of the Yobel Class. He was a delegate to the recent World Youth Day in Australia. Fr. Elmer and I were together in San Vicente Ferrer Parish, Sabang, Surigao City when I had my summer camp. He was still the Regent of the parish that time.

SVD JOKES 15: LANGUAGE DISASTER

Another SVD priest (he asked not to be named) remembered his Tagalog language blooper with delight. He wanted to have some Tagalog sentences in his homily. So, one time, he presided a burial mass at the cathedral and thought that it might be the perfect timing to have some Tagalog sentences in his homily.

And so he started, “Problems are part of our life….”

Then, he made a short pause and told himself that perhaps he could also say it in Tagalog.

So, he translated his opening salvo to the surprise of the people: “Ang problema ay kayo!” (Meaning, You are the problem!)

SVD JOKES #14: DISASTER MOMENT WITH FR. ORBOS

I was still in college that time when the sacristan mayor of Christ the King chapel (now Divine Word Shrine) hastily asked me to be the commentator for the birthday thanksgiving mass of Fr. Gerry Orbos, SVD. I became very excited since it was my first time to see him. When the mass was about to start, I confidently proclaimed in front of the congregation, “Our mass presider is Fr. Oscar Orbos, SVD!”

Suddenly, I realized people were smiling at me. I was really clueless, I turned my back and do some “zipper check.”

But my zipper was closed!

When Fr. Orbos was already in the altar, he smiled and said, “The commentator introduced me as Fr. Oscar Orbos. Brothers and sisters, I am not the one who ran for vice-president.”

Wahaha. Shame on me.

SVD JOKES #12: FR. IBAY’S LANGUAGE DISASTER

Last September 9 2001, I received an email from Fr. Robert Ibay, SVD, a Filipino SVD missionary to Chile and he narrated to me his language disaster. His story goes this way: “One time it was Lenten season, I had a paraliturgy with the grade 8. The gospel during the time was “when the soldiers broke the bones of Jesus (“los soldados rompieron los huesos de Jesus). Bones in Castellano is “huesos”, and eggs is “huevos.” Instead of saying, romperon los “huesos”de Jesus, I mispronounced it. The soldiers broke the “eggs” of Jesus! Such mispronunciation made funny the solemn celebration.

SVD JOKES 11: RAVINE EXPERIENCE WITH FR. HEINEMANN

Fr. George Heinemann, SVD (+1995) was once a missionary to China before going to the Philippines. During the war in China, missionaries as prisoners were transferred over the mountainous trails to Western China. The truck, with missionaries on top, lost breaking power. As the track was heading for the ravine, Father George walking beside it, tried to stop it with rock but that did not stop the truck; so, he threw his body in front of the wheel risking his life. SVD JOKES #9: FATHER REISMANN STRIKES AGAIN

Fr. Josef Reismann, SVD (+1993) once hitched a ride in the old jeep of a fellow missionary. “Of all the brands of gasoline,” Fr. Reismann claimed, “this particular one (mentioning the brand) is the best.” Then he went on to describe in details its numerous chemical ingredients. As he did so, the driver of the jeep lost control and crashed into the mountain on the right, causing the jeep to turn to its side. Both of them held tight to their seats and thus emerged unscratched. Fr. SVD JOKES #8: FR. REISMANN, WALKING ENCYCLOPEDIA

Fr. Josef Reismann, SVD (+1993) is a person with an astonishing memory! He could discuss anything under the sun, for which he was called a “walking encyclopedia.” He would start off with a topic and inexhaustively relate the minutest details so much so that an impatient listener would get bored.
For instance, a fellow priest was reportedly talking to him after lunch in San Jose Parish. The discussion was about the mechanism of the outboard motor of his banca. The younger priest was getting restless and itching to take his siesta. To avoid showing disrespect, he stood up motioning to answer the call of nature. Fr. Reismann also stood up and, atill expounding about his outboard motor, followed him. When the younger priest was about to enter the comfort room, he turned to Fr. Reismann and and blurted out, “Father, please stay outside, I can do this all by myself.”
Having closed the door, he was much relieved to be free at last! But when he stepped out of the SR, guess, who was waiting for him? Fr. Reismann! And off, he continued relating about his out-board motor. (Remembering Philippine SVD Missionaries who Have Gone Ahead, 88)
